Day, McLaughlin out of MVP?

first_imgThere are strong indications that World Championships 400m finalist Christine Day is among the athletes who will be leaving the MVP Track Club ahead of coming season.Day, along with her sister, Jonique; struggling quarter-miler Riker Hylton, who only recently left the Racers Track Club; Natasha Morrison; and one-time Holmwood Technical standout Anneisha McLaughlin-Whitby, herself a finalist in the 200m at the 2009 World Championships, are all believed to be on their way out of the Stephen Francis-led programme. When contacted yesterday, President of the MVP Track Club Bruce James could neither confirm nor deny the development, offering instead that several changes will be made at the University of Technology-based outfit, with some athletes leaving, noting that there will also be a few additions to the unit as well.”There are some changes – additions and subtractions – but I can’t say anything else at this point. Not everyone has returned to training yet, but once everything is finalised and we put everything together completely, we will be giving an update as to the athletes in the programme,” said James.Day, who is coming off one of her best seasons as a professional, was one of 15 MVP athletes who represented Jamaica at the recent World Championships in Beijing, China.Personal bestsThe 29-year-old twice got personal-best marks in her 400m pet event – first clocking 50.16 to match her career best en route to winning at the National Senior Championships in June, before stopping the clock at 50.14 to finish fourth in the final in Beijing. She was also a member of Jamaica’s gold medal-winning 4x400m relay team.McLaughlin-Whitby, who decided to take a break from the track last season after nearly two decades of competing, is also believed to be among the athletes who won’t return to train at MVP.McLaughlin has been training out of the G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sports, where Maurice Wilson’s SprintTec group, which also includes Sherone Simpson and Rasheed Dwyer, is based. Wilson is, of course, McLaughlin’s former coach at Holmwood Technical.last_img read more
