Raphoe schoolgirls hoping to strike gold in Barcelona with ‘Clean Guard’ invention

first_imgThree Co Donegal schoolgirls are off to Barcelona later this month hoping their sports invention might just strike gold in more ways than one.Deele College pupils Ellie Barron, Saffron Porter and Stephanie Harper are already All-Ireland champs after their ‘Clean Guard’ product was named the best in the country in the Foroige Youth Entrepreneurship awards in May.The product is an ingenious way for sportspeople to keep mouth guards or gum shields clean, the holder containing a liquid sanitizer which kills 98 per cent of bacteria. Now the girls from the Raphoe school will represent Ireland in the European competition in Barcelona on November 22, 23 and 24.County Gaelic underage footballer Ellie Barron – joint captain as Donegal U16s won an Ulster A title last year – says the girls believe the European exposure to their product might help their product to go global.Deele College pupils Ellie Barron, Saffron Porter and Stephanie Harper with Minister for Education and Skills Joe McHughThey’ve already had the product endorsed by boxing champ Jason Quigley, Donegal Ladies and Marty Reilly.“We’re really looking forward to going to Barcelona now,” said Convoy teenager Ellie. “We were over the moon to represent Donegal in the Youth Entrepreneurship in Dublin in May and I have to say we were in total shock when we won the whole thing.“Now we’re looking forward to representing our country in Barcelona. It is an amazing opportunity for more people to see ‘Clean Guard’ – a great marketing opportunity and we are hoping to make connections there which would help sell the product in other countries.“So many sportspeople use mouth guards in so many different sports, from hockey to rugby to boxing and of course to gaelic football.”Saffron says the trip to Spain wouldn’t happen without the help of teacher Orla Gallagher and principal Joe Boyle.“We used our transition year well,” said Saffron. “Ms Gallagher gave us so much help throughout the year, as did the Business Department and the entire school community got behind us. It’s only sinking in now how well we have done. It would be wonderful to go a wee step further so we’ll see.”The girls travel with their teacher to Barcelona on November 21 for the three-day event which begins the next day. They say they are grateful to a number of local sponsors who’ve helped to pay for the trip including the Emerald Guitar Company, the County Seat, Creative Landscaping Workshop, Maguire’s Foodfare, Reillys Sportswear, Cherrymore Kitchens and the Convoy Community Playgroup. You can see the Clean Guard product here: https://www.facebook.com/CleanGuard1/ Raphoe schoolgirls hoping to strike gold in Barcelona with ‘Clean Guard’ invention was last modified: November 13th, 2019 by Staff WriterShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:Clean Guarddeele collegeRaphoelast_img read more

New UN body to focus on women

first_imgFormer Chilean President Michelle Bachelet is sworn in as executive director of UN Women by UN secretary- general Ban Ki-Moon. (Image: UN Woman) The creation of a new body, UN Women – or the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women – was celebrated on 30 January 2011 at the 16th Summit of the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Speaking about the new entity at the summit, UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon said: “There is progress here and there on the continent regarding women’s rights, but we must go much further to ensure greater gender equality in Africa. It is not just a matter of justice as the facts show indeed that gender equality is a factor of growth and social peace.”The entity should place emphasis on African women’s access to education, health and political responsibility, Ban added.Achieving gender equality was a key theme of the 2011 AU summit.“We need to empower African women who produce food, raise children and drive the economy. When women take their rightful place at the negotiating table, in parliament and in leadership positions across society, we can unleash Africa’s enormous potential. UN Women is here to help reach this goal,” said the secretary-general.Unveiling UN Women’s new logo at the summit, its executive director Michelle Bachelet said: “A vision of how much more is possible when men and women have equal rights and opportunities will drive UN Women. We will be bold and ambitious in our aspirations and we will also be practical in building an organisation that can make a lasting difference in women’s lives.”Bachelet was Chile’s first woman president, serving her term from 11 March 2006 to 11 March 2010. She prioritised women’s issues during her tenure and has been working with the UN Development Fund for Women (Unifem) since leaving office.Pushing gender equalityUN Women was created in July 2010 at a UN General Assembly session and became operational on 1 January 2011.It merges four previously distinct entities of the UN focusing on gender equality: Division for the Advancement of Women; International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women; Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women; and Unifem.UN Women will see to the development of women-friendly policies, and help member states implement and monitor them.Celebrating African leadersAt this year’s AU summit, President of Equatorial Guinea Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo took over the rotating presidency of the AU from Malawian President Bing wa Mutharika. The choice of Mbasogo has been criticised as taking the AU back to the days when dictators led the now-defunct Organisation of African Unity. Mbasogo has ruled Equatorial Guinea with an iron fist for more than 30 years after executing his predecessor. The UN secretary-general spoke about the unrest in Egypt and the political crisis in Côte d’Ivoire at the summit, but also commended the successful secession referendum in Sudan.French President Nicholas Sarkozy said that France would continue to support development on the African continent.President of South Africa Jacob Zuma also addressed delegates at the summit.“Today we also celebrate many outstanding leaders on the continent. We were inspired by Julius Nyerere, Kenneth Kaunda, Patrice Lumumba, Kwame Nkrumah, Haile Sellasie, Jomo Kenyatta, Gamal Abdel Nasser, Ahmed Ben Bella, Samora Machel, Agostinho Neto, Ahmed Sekou Toure, Amilcar Cabral, Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa, and many others.”“We continue to draw inspiration from their selflessness, commitment and dedication to this continent and its people,” added Zuma.last_img read more

Tax cut bills move toward reconciliation

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The House recently voted to go to conference with the Senate to reconcile differences between each chamber’s proposed tax bill, and both houses selected their conference committee members. The Senate is expected to vote on going to conference in the coming days. The National Pork Producers Council will evaluate the effect on pork producers of the tax plan that comes out of the conference committee. Expected to be in the final tax measure are provisions that were in both bills, including ones that establish new pass-through tax rates, reduce rates for subchapter C corporations and consolidate individual tax rates; eliminate the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT), expand the bonus depreciation deduction for certain assets and increase the deduction for Section 179 equipment; and increase the exemption from and eventually repeal the estate tax while retaining stepped-up basis. NPPC supports those provisions.last_img read more

Twitter Cuts Deal with Yahoo

first_imgmike melanson A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos These days, the web of connections between various social media sites, search engine giants, old software stand bys and hot Internet startups is starting to look like the diagram of an incestuous group of teenagers. And today, that web got one more strand, as Yahoo and Twitter announced a partnership that will bring the two companies closer together. The deal comes on the heels of this morning’s revelation that Twitter will be soon unveiling an advertising platform, which means more tweets seen in more places, and therefore more revenue. The Los Angeles Times quotes Twitter co-founder Bizz Stone on the significance of the deal.“The information in one single tweet can travel light years farther with this Yahoo integration,” Stone said in a statement. “Tweets in more places brings relevance where and when you need it most.”According to a press release by Yahoo, the deal will bring Twitter’s content to Yahoo’s network of nearly 600 million people worldwide. For Yahoo, this brings Twitter to the table where it had already seated next to social network giant Facebook, but we think this might be an even better deal for Twitter. The press release breaks down the partnership into three key areas. First, Twitter feeds will be available across Yahoo, from the home page to mail and beyond. Yahoo’s users will also be able to update Twitter and share content directly from Yahoo. Search results will also contain tweets as well as a number of Yahoo media properties, such as news, finance, entertainment and sports. Of course, while we see this as a big deal for Twitter, our recent conversation with Gigya CEO David Yovanno tells us that for Yahoo to stay in the game, deals like this are necessary. Social networks are quickly becomming bigger traffic-driving forces than search engines, so integration is key.Kara Swisher, of the All Things Digital blog, explains that Twitter’s content will be woven in throughout Yahoo’s content as part of Yahoo’s “Project Rushmore“, which looks to integrate social media into the Internet portal. There have been a number of deals like this in recent weeks. Microsoft last week struck a similar deal with both Facebook and Myspace, as well as LinkedIn, to bring social media streams to Outlook. Just last fall, Twitter made deals with both Microsoft and Google to bring tweets to search results on those services.Soon enough, it seems there won’t be a dark or dusty corner of the Web that remains untouched by the latest 140-character slice of life your social network chooses to share. And with Twitter’s recent rash of hirings, this announcement, in conjunction with their announcement of an ad platform, means the microblog can afford to pay its employees and hopefully unveil some interesting new features in the future. first_imgLiverpool’s Robertson says Fabinho ‘different class’ at centre-backby Freddie Taylor9 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveAndy Robertson has admitted his admiration for his teammate Fabinho. The Brazilian was drafted in for centre-back duty given the injury crisis the Reds are experiencing in that position. He turned in a top display alongside Virgil Van Dijk, helping his side to a 1-0 win away to Brighton. And Robertson was very impressed with what he saw.”For somebody playing out of position, he covered so well, he cleared away and had so many good blocks,” Robertson reflected to the club’s official website.”So credit to him because it can’t have been easy for him playing out of position. I’m sure Fabinho would have preferred to play as the No.6 but that’s the attitude we have in the squad, we are all willing to play in different positions if we have to.”I’m sure the manager just told him early doors and he embraced it and I thought he was brilliant. I thought he was different class.” About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

The boy went in to make a tackle.”Mo Salah is a world-class player but you can tackle him. It wasn’t even a bad tackle.”You have to ensure they stay aggressive because that is their game, without overstepping the line.”If you look at the team we play in an aggressive but sporting way.”Young Hamza is one of those lads that play on the limit and is fighting for his career.”His strength is recovering the ball and retrieving the ball, which he is very good at, and he is learning other aspects of his game.”The only way is constant work and talking with him.” last_img read more
